Chemical formula: CH 3 (CH 2 ) 11 OH. Also known as 1-dodecanol or dodecyl alcohol. A colorless, linear, saturated monohydric alcohol with a peculiar odor. Melting point: 23.5°C, boiling point: 153.5°C (25mmHg), specific gravity: d 4 20 = 0.8330, refractive index : n D 20 = 1.4428 (supercooled). Practically soluble in water, soluble in ethyl alcohol and ether. Small amounts exist in sperm oil as esters with fatty acids. Industrially, it is produced by reducing lauric acid, which is obtained from coconut oil or palm kernel oil, with sodium or high-pressure reduction using a catalyst (100-200 atm, 250-400°C), or by adding ethylene to trialkylaluminum (Ziegler alcohol process).
