A medieval French poet and storyteller, born in northern France in 1165-1230. He lived a poor, wandering life. His masterpiece, Mélogie de Portlégues (early 13th century), is a clever psychological analysis of a theme from Arthurian legend, and is a weave of complex episodes, showing the influence of Chrétien de Troyes. His allegorical moral poem, Dream of Hell (c. 1210), tells of a dream of descent into hell, in which the protagonist passes through the towns of Greed and Betrayal, crosses the River Eclipse, and arrives at the cursed city of Hell. Another allegorical moral poem, Winged Tales (c. 1234), shows how to become a perfect court knight.

中世フランスの詩人，物語作者。北フランスに生まれ，貧しい放浪生活を送る。アーサー王伝説の一主題の巧みな心理分析によって物語り，錯綜した挿話の織物となっている代表作《メロージ･ド･ポールレゲ》(13世紀初頭)にはクレティアン･ド･トロアの影響がみられる。寓意による教訓詩《地獄の夢》(1210ころ)は地獄下りの夢を物語り，主人公は〈貪欲〉〈裏切り〉の町を過ぎ，〈大食河〉を越えて呪われた地獄の市に着く。同じ寓意的教訓詩《翼物語》(1234ころ)は完全な宮廷騎士への処法を示す。
