Mount Rausu - Rausudake

A stratovolcano located almost in the center of the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido. It straddles Shari Town under the jurisdiction of the Okhotsk General Bureau and Rausu Town under the jurisdiction of the Nemuro Subprefectural Bureau. It is 1,661 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak of the Shiretoko volcanic group, and is based on the Neogene layer, and is composed of andesitic lava and volcanic debris, and the summit forms a lava dome. There is a flower field of alpine plants at Rausu-daira near the summit. There are Rausu Onsen on the southeastern foot and Iwaobetsu Onsen on the northwestern foot, and it is also a base for climbing Mt. Rausu. It is in the Shiretoko National Park and the Shiretoko World Heritage Site. From the summit, you can see the Shiretoko mountain range, Kunashiri Island, and more. In the Ainu language, it was called Chachanupuri (Old Man/Mountain).

北海道東部、知床半島(しれとこはんとう)のほぼ中央に位置する成層火山。オホーツク総合振興局管内の斜里町(しゃりちょう)と根室(ねむろ)振興局管内の羅臼町にまたがる。標高1661メートル。知床火山群の最高峰で、新第三紀層を基盤とし、安山岩質溶岩、火山砕屑(さいせつ)物などからなり、山頂は溶岩円頂丘をなしている。山頂近くの羅臼平には高山植物のお花畑がある。南東麓(ろく)に羅臼温泉、北西麓に岩尾別温泉(いわおべつおんせん)があり、羅臼岳登山の基地ともなっている。知床国立公園域で、また、世界自然遺産「知床」域。山頂からは知床連山、国後(くなしり)島などを眺望できる。アイヌ語ではチャチャヌプリ（老爺・山）とよばれていたという。
