Sulfate of lead. Salts with oxidation states II and IV are known. (1) Lead(II) sulfate The chemical formula is PbSO 4 and the formula weight is 303.3. It is produced as pyrite. It is obtained by adding a soluble sulfate solution to an aqueous solution of lead(II) salt. It is slightly soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol (ethyl alcohol), and slightly soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid. It dissolves in alkali hydroxides, and becomes lead(II) oxide in strong alkalis. It dissolves in aqueous solutions of ammonium salts. Lead(II) hydrogen sulfate monohydrate, Pb(HSO 4 ) 2.H 2 O, is obtained by electrolysis in sulfuric acid using a lead electrode and concentrating the anolyte. (2) Lead(IV) sulfate, chemical formula Pb(SO 4 ) 2 , formula weight 399.3. It is obtained by reacting lead(IV) acetate with concentrated sulfuric acid or by careful electrolysis in a sulfuric acid bath using a lead electrode. It is a yellow crystalline powder. It is stable in dry air, but decomposes in the presence of moisture to form lead(IV) oxide, PbO 2 . Basic lead sulfate 3PbO.PbSO4.H2O , a basic salt, is obtained by treating lead oxide (II) PbO with a small amount of acetic acid and sulfuric acid, making it slightly alkaline with sodium hydroxide, and precipitating it. It is a white fine powder. It is used as a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride resin.
