A city in southern England, United Kingdom. A unitary authority. It belongs to the former county of Berkshire. It became a unitary authority in 1998. It is located about 60 km west of London, where the River Kennet joins the River Thames. It is an old town dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period, and the chronicles record that it was attacked by the Danes in 871. When a Benedictine monastery was built in 1121, Henry I granted the town to the monastery, and the monastery and the merchant guild repeatedly fought over privileges from the 12th to 16th centuries, but during this time the town flourished as a textile industry. In the 17th century, the textile industry declined, and the Puritan Revolution caused great damage. It is a distribution center for an agricultural area known for seed cultivation, and is a thriving grain and livestock trader. It is also an industrial city, especially famous for biscuit manufacturing. Other industries include printing, iron metallurgy, machinery, computers, and bricks. The University of Reading (1926) plays an important role in the fields of agriculture, horticulture and dairy farming. The city has an area of ​​40 km2 and a population of 145,100 (estimated 2005).

A city in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. It is located 93 km northwest of Philadelphia, on the Schuylkill River. It was founded in 1748 when the sons of Pennsylvania pioneer W. Penn planned the urban area. Many of the first settlers were German, and even today, large ethnic festivals are held here that evoke the atmosphere of the past. Cannons were manufactured here during the Revolutionary War, and industry remains thriving today, with auto parts, railroad cars, casting, textiles, and other industries well developed. There are also many academic institutions and facilities, including Pennsylvania State University, Temple University, museums, and art galleries. Population 78,380 (1990).

イギリス,イングランド南部の都市。単一自治体(ユニタリー unitary authority)。旧バークシャー県に属する。1998年に単一自治体となった。ロンドンの西約 60km,ケネット川がテムズ川に合流する地点に位置する。アングロ・サクソン時代にさかのぼる古い町で,年代記によると 871年デーン人に攻撃されたことが記されている。1121年ベネディクト会の修道院が建設されると,ヘンリー1世は町を修道院に付与したため,12~16世紀には修道院と商人ギルドが特権をめぐり抗争を繰り返したが,この間織物工業で発展。17世紀には織物工業が衰えるとともに,清教徒革命でも大きな損害を受けた。種苗栽培で知られる農業地帯の集散地で,穀物や家畜の取り引きが盛んなほか,工業都市でもあり,特にビスケット製造で有名。ほかに印刷,鉄冶金,機械,コンピュータ,煉瓦などの工業がある。レディング大学(1926)は農業,園芸,酪農の分野で特に重要な役割を果たしている。面積 40km2。人口 14万5100(2005推計)。
