Black-faced Bunting (English spelling)

Japanese: アオジ(青鵐) - アオジ（英語表記）black‐faced bunting

A passerine bird of the family Emberizidae (illustration). It is about 16 cm long and a little larger than a sparrow. Its back is brown and its underside is yellow. Sexes are different, with males having a gray-blue head and black eyes and the base of their beak. When confronted by other males, they ruffle the feathers in this area and open their beaks to show the red part of their mouths. When excited, they ruffle the feathers on their heads. They are distributed from southeastern Siberia to China, the Korean peninsula, and Japan, and in Japan they breed from central to northern Honshu and winter in the southwest. They are forest-dwelling, but prefer areas with a lot of brush such as forest edges, secondary forests, and swamp forests, and are often seen in the shrub-like areas of reforested areas.

スズメ目ホオジロ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約16cm，スズメより少し大きい。背面は褐色，体の下面は黄色。雌雄異色で，雄の頭部が灰青色で，眼先とくちばしの付け根が黒く，雄どうしの対立のときには，この部分の羽毛を逆立てて，くちばしを開けて口腔の赤い部分を見せる。興奮すると頭部の羽毛を逆立てる。シベリア南東部から中国，朝鮮半島，日本にかけて分布し，日本では本州中部以北で繁殖し，南西部で越冬している。森林性であるが，林縁とか，二次林，湿地林などのやぶの多いところを好み，造林地の低木状のところにもよく見られる。
