A group of Late Paleolithic archaeological sites located in the village of Kostenki and the adjacent area, on the right bank of the Don River in southwestern Russia, 40 km south of the city of Voronezh. Also called Kostenki or Kostenki, they are located at the tip of a promontory plateau formed at the mouth of a small tributary that flows into the Don River. The cultural layers are contained in sandy clay layers of the Upper Pleistocene, and some of the sites are multi-layered with several cultural layers. The multi-layered sites of Kostenki I, Aleksandrov, Terimansk, and Bolshevo I are outstanding among Paleolithic sites in Europe. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
