Johnson, Uwe

Johnson, Uwe
Born: July 20, 1934. Kamin, Pommern
[Died] 23/24 February 1984. Schoenis, England. West German novelist. Studied German literature at universities in Rostock and Leipzig in East Germany, and moved to West Berlin in 1959. In the same year, he published Mutmaßungen über Jakob (Speculations about Jakob), a novel based on the mysterious death of an East German railway worker whose girlfriend worked for the NATO. In his subsequent novels Das dritte Buch über Achim (1961) and Zwei Ansichten (65), he persistently pursued the bizarre reality and absurdity of a divided nation, making full use of experimental techniques that shift time and perspective and pile up details. In his masterpiece Jahrestage (4 volumes, 70-83), he made Jakob's girlfriend the protagonist, and showed a new development in his style. He is one of the most talented writers in contemporary German literature. He is said to have died of heart failure at home on the night of February 23rd or 24th, 1984. His body was discovered on March 12th.
