A marine fish of the family Scyllidae in the order Siluriformes (illustration). It is also called the sea bass. It is widely distributed from central Honshu southward, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula to the southwest Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Red Sea, and lives among rocky reefs near the shore. It reaches a total length of 30 cm, and its body is rather long, thick at the front, and thin and flat at the back. Its head is flat from top to bottom, and its mouth is round. It has eight balanus. It has two dorsal fins, and one hard spine each on the first dorsal fin and on both the left and right pectoral fins. These spines contain poison glands, which cause severe pain when stung. ナマズ目ゴンズイ科の海産魚(イラスト)。ウミギギとも呼ばれる。本州中部以南,四国,九州,朝鮮半島南岸から南西太平洋,インド洋および紅海に広く分布し,岸近くの岩礁の間などにすむ。全長30cmに達し,体はやや長く,前部は太く,後部は左右に平たく細い。頭部は上下に平たく,口先はまるい。口びげは8本。背びれは2基で,第1背びれと左右の胸びれには各1本の堅いとげがある。このとげには毒腺があって刺されると激しく痛む。
