Canada-US Automotive Agreement

...After World War II, this was further strengthened through the Defense Production Sharing Agreement of 1959. The conclusion of the Canada-US Auto Pact in 1965 set the precedent for the realization of comprehensive free trade between Canada and the US as a case of free trade in a specific industrial sector. In the 1980s, as competition in the world market intensified, there was a growing recognition within Canada that the competitiveness of Canadian companies should be strengthened by engaging in comprehensive free trade with the United States and freely entering the huge American market.
