Urashimasou - Urashimasou

Japanese: ウラシマソウ - うらしまそう
Urashimasou - Urashimasou

A perennial plant of the Araceae family (APG classification: Araceae). It has a corm and reproduces by producing many bulblets. It has one leaf, a short pseudostem, and a leaf blade with many leaflets in a goosefoot shape. It flowers from April to May. The spathe is purple-brown and the tube is white. The inflorescence appendages are smooth overall, with elongated thread-like tips that reach a length of 30 cm. It is distributed from Hokkaido to parts of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and grows under and on the edges of forests. The subspecies Nangokuurashimasou subsp. thunbergii is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and surrounding areas west of the Kii Peninsula, and is distinguished by the fact that the lower thick part of the appendage is usually milky white, it has dense pleated thin projections, and the leaves often have white spots. In southern Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture, there is A. kiushianum Makino, which is small overall and has a clove-shaped white spot on the inside of the spathe. The Japanese name Urashima comes from the likening of the thread-like appendages to Urashima Taro's fishing line.
