[Area classification]
The Korean Peninsula is divided into the North and South by the Chugaryeong Region, which stretches from Seoul to Wonsan. The northeastern part of the North, centered on Hamgyong Province and separated by the Nanrim Mountains, is called the Kanbuk region, while the northwestern part, centered on Pyeongan Province and including Hwanghae Province, is called the Kansai region. Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province, and Chungcheong Province form the Chubu region, while Jeolla Province, Gyeongsang Province, and Jeju Island (now part of Jeju Province) form the Nanbu region.
