Land division - Warichijiwari

Japanese: 割地･地割 - わりちじわり

The term "chiwari" generally means simply dividing and allocating land in a planned and artificial manner. In Japan, this is the result of the implementation of the jori system during the ancient land allotment system, and the grid system within Heijo-kyo and Heian-kyo, and since the Meiji period, each plot of land has been assigned a land character and a land number. On the other hand, the "chiwari" and "chiwari" mentioned here refers to the periodic land allocation system (the practice of reallocating land to farmers at regular intervals) that was a land system during the Edo period. This was practiced in various places, including Kaga, Noto, Echizen, Etchu, Echigo, Shinano, Owari, Ise, Tango, Hitachi, Iwashiro, Tosa, Iyo, Bungo, Chikuzen, Hizen, Hyuga, Satsuma, Iki, Tsushima, and Ryukyu.

地割という場合には，一般には単に土地を計画的，人工的に区分し割りつけるという意味に用いられる。日本では古代班田制の時代における条里制の施行によるものや，平城京，平安京内の条坊制によるものがあり，明治以後は土地の一区画ごとに地字，地番を付けている。　他方，ここにいう割地･地割とは，江戸時代の土地制度としての土地の定期割替制(一定期間ごとに土地を農民に割り当てなおす慣行)のことである。加賀，能登，越前，越中，越後，信濃，尾張，伊勢，丹後，常陸，岩代，土佐，伊予，豊後，筑前，肥前，日向，薩摩，壱岐，対馬，琉球などの各地で行われた。
