A character in the Old Testament. Jacob's 11th son. His mother was Rachel. He was Jacob's most beloved son, but because of his brothers' jealousy, he was sold to a caravan heading to Egypt. At the time, Egypt was under the control of the Hyksos dynasty (c. 1720-1570 BC), which was established by invaders from the East. Joseph was also sold to Potiphar by an official of Pharaoh in Egypt, and was his favorite, but when he refused the advances of his master's wife, he was accused of adultery and imprisoned. While in prison, he interpreted the dreams of two of Pharaoh's officials, which led to him interpreting Pharaoh's dreams as well, predicting a great famine eight years later and suggesting the storage of grain. As a result, Pharaoh held him in high esteem and made him governor over all of Egypt. He married Asenath, the daughter of Potipherah, a priest of On, and had two children, Manasseh and Ephraim. During the year of the great famine, Jacob's sons also came to Egypt from Canaan to secure food at Jacob's request. On their second visit to Egypt, Joseph revealed himself to Jacob, called him over, and gave the land of Rameses to his father and brothers, treating them well. He died at the age of 110 and was buried in Egypt (Genesis 37-50). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
