Shrimp Moth (Agrius convolvuli)

Japanese: エビガラスズメ(蝦殻天蛾) - エビガラスズメ（英語表記）Agrius convolvuli

An insect of the Lepidoptera family Sphingidae. It is large among the moths of this family, with a span of about 9cm. The sides and back of the abdomen are red, and each segment is a black stripe. Most moths in this family have a well-developed proboscis (tongue), but the tongue of the Japanese bush shrike is particularly long, reaching 10cm when stretched out. It flies around in search of nectar at dusk, and also flies to lights at night. It is found almost everywhere in the world except the Americas, and its strong flying ability allows it to travel long distances, making it indigenous to islands in the ocean.

鱗翅目スズメガ科の昆虫。この科のガの中では大型で，開張9cm内外。腹部の側面から背面にかけては赤色で，各節は帯状に黒い。一般にこの科のものは，口吻（こうふん）(舌)の発達したものが多いが，エビガラスズメの舌はとくに長く，のばすと10cmに達する。夕暮時に花みつを求めて飛び回り，夜間灯火にも飛来する。アメリカ大陸を除くほぼ世界全域に分布し，飛翔（ひしよう）力が強いため長距離を移動できるので，大洋上の島々にも土着している。
