Maréchal, Joseph
Born: July 1, 1878, Charleroi
Died December 11, 1944. Rouen. Belgian Catholic philosopher. In 1895 he joined the Society of Jesus and studied biology at the University of Leuven while receiving a theological education. In 1908 he became a priest, and later studied experimental psychology and psychotherapy in Germany, before moving to England in 1914. From 1919 to 1935 he taught psychology and the history of modern philosophy at the Jesuit College in Leuven, and became a leading Neo-Scholastic philosopher. His research subjects were the psychology of religious experience and the criticism of cognition. In his criticism of cognition, he incorporated Kant while seeking the key to solving the problem in the epistemology of Thomas Aquinas. His main works are Le point de départ de la métaphysique (5 volumes, 1923-26) and Etude sur la psychologie des mystiques (2 volumes, 24-33).

Born: October 3, 1892 in Dijon
[Died] April 19, 1964. Paris. French cellist. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and made his debut as a soloist in 1912. In addition to his solo career, he was also known for his trios with A. Cortot and J. Thibaud. In 1942, he became a professor at his alma mater. Many composers, including Ravel, Honegger, and Milhaud, dedicated cello pieces to him.

ベルギーのカトリック哲学者。 1895年イエズス会に入り,神学教育を受けながらルーバン大学で生物学を学んだ。 1908年司祭,のちドイツで実験心理学,精神療法を学び,14年イギリスに渡った。 19~35年ルーバンのイエズス会学院で心理学,近代哲学史などを教え,新スコラ哲学の代表的哲学者となった。研究主題は宗教体験の心理学と認識批判である。認識批判ではカントを摂取しつつ問題の解決の鍵をトマス・アクィナスの認識論に求めている。主著『形而上学の出発点』 Le point de départ de la métaphysique (5巻,1923~26) ,『神秘家の心理学についての研究』 Etude sur la psychologie des mystiques (2巻,24~33) 。
