A former town in the eastern part of the Kunisaki Peninsula, Higashi Kunisaki District, Oita Prefecture. It occupies the Musashi River basin, one of the radiating valleys of the Futago volcano, and is a major producer of rice, wheat, and mandarin oranges. It is home to Oita Airport and the Kunisaki Pagoda of Shoonji Temple (an important cultural property). In March 2006, it merged with Kunimi Town, Kunisaki Town, and Aki Town in Higashi Kunisaki District to become a city, Kunisaki City. Area: 41.84 km2 . Population: 5,933 (2003). 大分県東国東(ひがしくにさき)郡,国東半島東部の旧町。両子(ふたご)火山の放射谷の一つ武蔵川の流域を占め,米麦,ミカンの栽培が盛ん。大分空港がある。照恩寺国東塔(重要文化財)がある。2006年3月,東国東郡国見町,国東町,安岐町と合併し市制,国東市となる。41.84km2。5933人(2003)。
