It was opened in 1800 by a resolution of Congress, and is currently located on the left side of the Capitol in Washington DC. As the nation's central library, the Copyright Act was revised in 1965, and copyrights are protected by depositing books in this building. It aims to be not only a national library, but also an international library. The union catalog contains 488 books acquired before World War II, 119 books added after the war, and 9 indexes for these. There are also about 600,000 books related to Japan in the Oriental Section. 議会の決議により 1800年院内に開かれ,現在はワシントン D.C.の国会議事堂の向って左側にあり,同国の中央図書館として 65年改正の著作権法により,この館に納本することにより著作権が保護されることになった。国民の図書館であるだけでなく,国際的図書館を志している。総合目録は第2次世界大戦前受入れの図書の分が 488冊,戦後増加分が 119冊,それのインデックスが9冊ある。東洋部中の日本関係書も約 60万冊ある。
