A town on the coast of southeastern Virginia in the eastern United States. It is located 90 km southeast of Richmond and overlooks the York River. It was founded in 1691. Blessed with a good harbor, it once flourished as an export port of tobacco, but the town's economy declined after the Revolutionary War. In the 20th century, industry developed and prosperity was restored. It is famous as the place where American forces under General G. Washington defeated the British in 1781 (→Battle of Yorktown). The entire town is included in Colonial National Historical Park, and remains include Moorhouse, where the surrender documents were drafted.
