Ebetsu River

...The Yubari River flows out of Lake Shuparo, forming a leading valley from the Momijiyama area of ​​Yubari City, crossing the western Yubari Mountains, entering the Ishikari Plain near the city of Kuriyama-cho at the northern end of the Umaoi Hills, and merging with the Ishikari River near the city of Ebetsu. The current straight river course between Kuriyama-cho and Ebetsu is an artificial river excavated in 1936 to prevent flooding. The old Yubari River course, which flows southwest after entering the Ishikari Plain, merges with the Chitose River to become the Ebetsu River, which flows into the Ishikari River in the city of Ebetsu. After World War II, as part of the Hokkaido Comprehensive Development Project, the river channel was improved and the Oyubari Dam (which turned Lake Shuparo into a dam lake) was built.
