1781‐1865 Venezuelan lawyer and educator. Known as the father of South American intellectuals. Born in Caracas, he traveled to London in 1810 as an envoy for Simon Bolivar, staying there for 19 years and continuing his studies in linguistics and literature while on duty. Invited to Chile in 1829, he founded the University of Santiago in 1843 and served as rector until his death. In 1855 he compiled the Chilean Civil Code, which had a wide influence on South American countries, and his Grammar of the Castilian Language (1847) remains invaluable to this day.
