A small tree of the Agavaceae family. Native to Mexico, it grows to a height of 2-3m. It is characterized by a tokkuri-shaped swelling at the bottom of the trunk. Dense linear leaves, about 1.8cm wide and 80-100cm long, grow from the top of the trunk, and the tips droop. The minimum cold-tolerance temperature is about 3°C. In warm areas, it can be planted outdoors, but it is generally grown in a pot. Small plants will grow larger if replanted in a pot one size larger each year. Use well-draining soil and grow in full sun. Water thoroughly during the growing season from spring to summer, and sparingly in winter.
