…Poison is obtained from various plants, but the most common are several species of Strychnos (Machinaceae), whose bark is thoroughly boiled and then simmered to produce curare. Other species, such as Chondrodendron , Abuta , and Telitoxicum (Menispermaceae), and plants of the Nectandra genus (Lauraceae) are also used as arrow poisons. Those from the Orinoco River basin are called pot-curare, which is derived mainly from Strychnos plants, those from Brazil are called tube-curare, which is derived mainly from Menispermaceae plants, and those from Guiana and Colombia are called calabash-curare, which is derived mainly from Strychnos plants. …
