Also called chlorophyll. A green pigment in plants that acts as a light-receiving pigment. It is a substance in which various side chains are attached to porphyrin and magnesium is coordinated at the center. Depending on the difference in the side chain, there are a (solid blue-black), b (green-black), c (red-black), and d. Higher plants and green algae contain a and b, brown algae contain a and c, red algae contain a and d, and blue-green algae contain only a. Photosynthetic bacteria also contain another type of bacteriochlorophyll. In light reception, chlorophyll binds to proteins in the lamella, a membrane structure within the chloroplast, and acts as a plastid called P600, P570, etc. Extracted chlorophyll is commercially available as a colorant, deodorant, photosensitizer for color film, and raw material for phytol (a synthetic raw material for vitamins E and K).

クロロフィルともいう。植物の緑色色素で，光受容色素として働く。ポルフィリンに各種側鎖がつき，中心にマグネシウムが配位した物質で，側鎖などの差によってa (固体は青黒色) ，b (緑黒色) ，c (赤黒色) およびdがある。高等植物や緑藻はaとb，褐藻はaとc，紅藻はaとd，藍藻はaのみを含む。光合成細菌は，また別種のバクテリオクロロフィルを含む。光受容にあたっては，葉緑体内の膜構造であるラメラ中で，葉緑素は蛋白質と結合して，P600，P570などと呼ぶ色素体として作用する。なお抽出葉緑素は着色剤，防臭剤，カラーフィルムの感光剤，フィトール (ビタミンEおよびKの合成原料) の原料などとして市販されている。
