A town in the western part of the state of Perak, in the western part of the Malay Peninsula, Malaysia. Taiping was named after the end in 1873 of a complex battle between the Sultanate and a Chinese secret society over tin mining rights. Before World War II, it was the largest tin distribution center near the Larut Gorge, and was the state capital until 1942 under Japanese occupation. It lost this position to Ipoh, but tin and other commodities are still shipped through the outer port of Port Weld. On the outskirts are a lake park and the summer resort Mount Taiping (known as Maxwell Hill in English). The West Coast Line of the Malayan Railway runs through the town. Population 146,002 (1980).
