Japanese: ウンヌケ - うんぬけ

A large perennial grass of the grass family (illustration). It grows in large clumps in well-drained grasslands on hills. The Japanese name is a dialect of Aichi Prefecture and means cow hair. It may be derived from the long yellowish brown hair on the ears. The stems are erect and form clumps, cylindrical and 80-120 cm tall. The leaves are borne at the base and nodes of the stem, long and linear, about 30 cm long and 5 mm wide, and are characterized by thick, velvety yellow hairs covering the outer surface of the leaf sheaths at the base. The inflorescence appears at the top of the stem in September and October, and consists of 4-7 string-like tufts 10-15 cm long arranged in a corymb.

大型のイネ科の多年草（イラスト）。丘陵地の水はけのよい草地に大株を作って生える。和名は愛知県の方言で，牛の毛の意味である。穂の黄褐色の長毛に由来するのであろうか。茎は直立して株を作り，円柱形で高さは80～120cmである。葉は茎の根もとと茎の節とにつき，長い線形で，長さは30cm余り，幅は5mm余りあり，根もとの葉の鞘（さや）の外面に厚くビロード状の黄毛をかぶる特徴がある。花序は9～10月ころ，茎の頂に出るが，長さ10～15cmのひも状の総（ふさ）が4～7個散房状に並ぶ。
