A town in the Chao Phraya plain in south-central Thailand. It faces the Lopburi River, a branch of the river on the east bank. It is the capital of Lopburi Province. It flourished as the capital of the Hmong Dharavati Kingdom from the 7th century, and of the Khmer Kingdom from around the 10th century. From 1665, it became the royal residence during the rainy season under the Ayutthaya Dynasty, but after the Chakri Dynasty made Bangkok its capital in 1782, it gradually declined. The surrounding area is rich in rice-growing areas, and it is an important distribution center for rice. As one of Thailand's most important ancient capitals, it is home to the Ayutthaya Dynasty Royal Palace (archaeological museum), Khmer-era pagodas, numerous temples, and the residence of the first French ambassador, Alexandre Chaumont. Population: 54,373 (2000). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
