The Latin word condominium is a concept that originally emerged towards the end of the Holy Roman Empire. In international law, it means that two or more nations exercise sovereignty over the same territory together. There are many precedents for co-rule, and their forms vary. The most famous are those of Austria and Prussia over Schleswig-Holstein and Lauenburg in 1864-66, and those of Austria and Hungary over Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1909-18.

ラテン語でコンドミニウムcondominiumという。もともと神聖ローマ帝国の末期にあらわれた概念である。国際法上は，複数国家が同一地域に主権を共同行使することを意味する。共同統治の先例は多く，その形態も一様ではない。有名なのは，1864‐66年のシュレスウィヒ･ホルシュタインおよびラウエンブルクに対するオーストリア，プロイセンのそれ，1909‐18年のボスニアおよびヘルツェゴビナに対するオーストリア，ハンガリーのそれである。
