Its official name is Chilpancingo de los Bravos. It is the capital of Guerrero State in southern Mexico. It is located about 200 km south-southwest of Mexico City, in a mountain basin in the Southern Madre Mountains, overlooking the Huacapá (Petaquillas) River. It is about 1,360 m above sea level. It was built in 1591. It is known as the place where the first Mexican parliament was held in 1813, convened by J.M. Morelos y Pavón, a leader of the Mexican independence movement, and it was also a battlefield during the War of Independence and the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century. It is currently the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding agricultural and forestry areas, and corn, sugar cane, bananas, livestock, and timber are collected, distributed, and processed, and mezcal liquor and handmade handicrafts made from plant fibers are some of its specialty products. It is also the location of the Autonomous University of Guerrero (1867). A major highway connects Mexico City with Acapulco, a major port on the Pacific coast, and passes through it. The city's official name, "Bravos," commemorates the three Bravo brothers, including Nicolás Bravo, a hero of the War of Independence from the city. Population: 136,243 (1990 estimate).
