A Roman Catholic holiday commemorating the Christian saint Martin. November 11th. Martin founded the first monastery in Gaul and eventually became bishop of Tours, but he did not abandon his monastic life, instead educating many disciples and contributing to the spread of Christianity. When he was serving as a Roman soldier in the army of Amiens, one cold winter day he cut off half of his cloak and gave it to a nearly naked beggar. The next night, Christ appeared to him in a dream wearing the half of his cloak, and so Martin is often depicted with this scene. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
