A city in central Finland. It is located at the northern end of Lake Päijänne in the lake region. It is the central city of the Keski Suomi region and developed as a junction for north-south lake transport. It has a population of 80,372 (2001). To the west, there is a hill about 250 meters above sea level that is a remnant of the peneplain, a rare sight in the low-lying central-southern region. In the second half of the 19th century, educational institutions were established one after another, one of which was a teacher training college that was integrated into the University of Jyväskylä in 1966, and it developed into an educational city. Industries such as paper manufacturing are also beginning to grow. [Hideo Tsukada] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
