Solvation - solvation

In a solution, several solvent molecules bind around a solute molecule or ion to form a single molecular group. This binding can range from very weak and loose to fairly strong binding that satisfies the stoichiometric relationship of a certain composition. Hydration is a special case of solvation. It can also include the phenomenon of incorporating the solvent in the case of crystal formation (clathration). Solvation of polymers and other molecules is quite different from solvation of low molecular weight ions and molecules, and involves colloid chemistry issues.

溶液の中で、溶質の分子やイオンの周りに数個の溶媒分子が結合して一つの分子群をつくることをいう。この結合はきわめて弱いルーズなものである場合から、一定組成の化学量論的な関係を満足した、かなり強固なものが生成する場合までいろいろである。水和は溶媒和の特別な場合である。また結晶生成の場合に溶媒を取り込む現象（包接化）までを含めていうこともある。高分子などの溶媒和は、低分子量のイオンや分子の溶媒和とはかなりようすが異なり、コロイド化学的な問題を含むこととなる。
