〘 noun 〙 = shupanken (publishing rights) ※From Hanamado (1887-88) in Suehiro Tetsucho, "From mimeograph proofreading to applying for plate rights, engraving pictures and printing and binding." [Glossary] A translation of the English word copyright. Regarding copyright protection, Fukuzawa Yukichi wrote in "Western Affairs - Gai" ( 1866-70 ) that "those who write books and create illustrations are licensed to make their own private editions and earn profits from them, and thus make them private property. This is called a license for private editions (copyright)." This led to the establishment of the Publishing Ordinance ( 1869 ) after the Meiji Restoration. However, at first, terms such as "the right to strictly prohibit reprinting" and "the right to monopolize" were used, and "copyright" was not seen. In the 1870s, the words "copyright license" began to appear in the colophons of books, and "copyright" became common.
