… She later won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her first talkie, Coquette (1929), but her popularity was waning. Her film The Taming of the Shrew (1929), in which she co-starred with Fairbanks, was a box office failure, and she retired from the film industry in 1933. In 1937, however, she established a cosmetics company and demonstrated her businesswoman skills. She also wrote a memoir, Sunshine and Shadow (1955), among other books. In 1970, she donated many of her early films, which she had collected for Biograph, with the intention of incinerating them after her death, to the American Motion Picture Institute (AFI). In 1975, she was awarded a special Academy Award for her contributions to American cinema. Her biographical films, American Sweetheart and The Mary Pickford Story, were released in 1978. …
