Urbino (English spelling)
A town in the mountains in the province of Pesaro e Urbino in the Marche region in central Italy. It is located about 70 km west-northwest of Ancona. It became part of the Montefeltro family in the 12th century, and especially during the time of Federico in the 15th century, it was at its height as the capital of the Duchy of Urbino, one of the centers of the Italian Renaissance. The palace (National Art Museum) contains works by Raphael, who was born in Urbino, and Titian. A university was established in 1506. It became a Papal state in 1626. It was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. The old town, built in the Roman era and rebuilt in the 19th century, was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Site in 1998. The current residential area extends outside the surrounding walls and is clearly different from the ancient town. It is away from the main roads and is known as a tourist and university town. Population 15,125 (estimated 1991).
