A thick-shelled, semicircular snail of the Neritidae family that lives on coastal rocks (illustration). The shell is about 1.8 cm high and 1.9 cm wide, with a smooth, black surface with yellow-white spots and colored bands. The shell opening is semicircular, round on the outside and straight on the inside. The lid is calcareous and semicircular. It is commonly found from the Boso Peninsula of Honshu to Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. In summer, it lays yellow-white oval egg sacs on rocks. Theliostyla albicilla , a member of the same family, is similar to this species, but has about 20 thick ribs on the surface of its shell.
