The magnetic field that exists in the Sun. The Sun's magnetic field was first discovered in 1908 in sunspots. Later, magnetographs were developed to measure the solar magnetic field from the amount of polarization caused by the Zeeman effect of spectral lines, and it was revealed that the magnetic field is not only found in sunspots, but extends over the entire solar photosphere. In a typical sunspot, the magnetic field strength is about 3,000 Gauss, in areas where the chromosphere appears bright, it is about 100 Gauss, and in prominences, the magnetic field is 10 to 200 Gauss.
