The gods of the Rig Veda of India. They are usually listed as a pair of deities. They are young, beautiful, swift, intelligent, and of amazing strength. They are said to be especially fond of honey, and to pour large quantities of it from their horses' hooves. The chariots they ride in are honey-colored, carry the honey, and are drawn by birds or winged horses. They are said to be twins of Vivasvat and Saraniu, and are intimate with Surya, the daughter of the sun. They save people from misfortune and are excellent healers. They appear early in the morning. The name Ashvin means knight, but its origin is unclear. There are more than 50 hymns dedicated to the pair in the Rig Veda, and they are third in number to Indra, Agni, and Soma. In the Mitanni-Hittite treaty text from the 14th century BC, Nasati is given more importance than Mitra, Varuna, and Indra, but in the Avesta, the corresponding Nahaisya is ranked as a demon. In Greek mythology they correspond to the Dioscuri.
