…Portuguese navigator. A descendant of Dinís Dias, the discoverer of Cape Verde (Cape Verde), he was ordered to reach Prester John's country (Ethiopia, Prester John legend) by sea in 1486. He sailed south along the west coast of Africa and rounded the southern tip, but turned back when his crew rebelled. He named the southernmost cape of the African continent "Cape of Storms", but it was later changed to "Cape of Good Hope". In 1500, he joined the fleet of Pedro Álvares and P. A.
