"Confession in an Italian Language" (English: "Confession in an Italian Language")

The following year, he served as a volunteer army paymaster in an expedition to Sicily, and in March 1861, on his way back to the continent from the island, his ship was wrecked in the Tyrrhenian Sea, ending his life at just 30 years of age. During his lifetime, he wrote On Italian Popular Poetry (1854), the novel The Good Angel and Pastoral Short Stories (both 1856), and the collection of poems Fireflies (1858), but his fame as a literary man rests solely on his posthumous work The Creed of an Italian (1867). Written in 1857-58, this historical novel is written in the form of a Venetian man in his 80th year telling the story of his long life, and includes recollections of the political situation, such as the collapse of the Venetian Republic, the humiliation of being a political slave, the suffering and struggle for his country, and his belief in its restoration, as well as fond memories of his young niece.
