Hojo Ujinobu

He was born in 1545 (Tenbun 14) as the fifth son of the Sengoku daimyo Hojo Ujiyasu. His mother was the daughter of Imagawa Ujichika. He was commonly known as Sukegoro. His official title was Kanto Samansuke, and his title was Mino no Kami. As a boy, he stayed in Sunpu as a hostage under the Imagawa clan, where he is said to have become acquainted with Matsudaira Takechiyo (later Tokugawa Ieyasu), who was also a hostage. In 1567 (Eiroku 10), he became the son-in-law of Hojo Tamemasa, who ruled over Tamanawa Castle in Sagami Province and Miura County in the same province, and inherited control of the county, becoming the lord of Misaki Castle. In that position, he controlled pirates such as the Kajiwara clan, and was responsible for the maritime defense of Edo Bay, while also dealing with clans in the Boso region such as the Satomi clan. From 1569 until the downfall of the Hojo clan in 1590, he was intermittently stationed at Nirayama Castle in Izu Province as the castle commander, responding to invasions by the Takeda and Toyotomi clans. He also temporarily served as castellan of Tatebayashi Castle in Kozuke Province in the mid-Tensho era. In terms of diplomacy, he was in charge of negotiations with the Tokugawa and Toyotomi clans, due to his relationship with them as a boy. After the downfall of the Hojo clan, he was given land in Kawachi Province, and his eldest son, Ujimori, inherited the Sayama Domain of the Hojo clan. He died in 1600 (Keicho 5) at the age of 56. Currently, he has around 80 issued documents remaining, including a red seal letter bearing the inscription "Truth", as well as letters and stamps.
