A rebellion started by gold miners in the colony of Victoria in Australia in 1854. During the gold rush that began in 1851, about 20,000 miners concentrated in Ballarat (113 km west-northwest of Melbourne), the center of the gold rush. They were dissatisfied with the mining tax of 30 shillings per person per month, which was levied regardless of whether or not gold was discovered. In October 1854, a miner was murdered, and the Eureka Hotel, owned by the perpetrator, was burned down. In November, the miners formed a Reform League, and eventually erected a new national flag, the Southern Cross flag, and built a fort at the Eureka mines.
