Battle of Gettysburg - Gettysburg Battle

A decisive battle in the American Civil War. It took place near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, from July 1 to 3, 1863. Union commander General George G. Meade (1815-72) fought against Confederate forces under the command of General Robert Edward Lee (1807-70). While the Union forces had prepared an organized defense using a combination of modern rifled rifles and field artillery, the Confederates neglected the effectiveness of their firepower and advanced in a line-across formation directly against the Union's defensive positions, resulting in the battle's failure.
