...The plan to remake "Fading Flowers" in talkies also failed to materialize. This was because Griffith's "Victorian" sentimental melodramas no longer appealed to Jazz Age audiences. However, in recent years, critical attention has been focused on this "Victorianism," and melodramas such as "The Heart of the World" (1918) and "Orphans of the Storm" (1921), as well as idyllic pastoral romances such as "Susie's Heart" and "Valley of Happiness" (both 1919), have been reevaluated, and the importance of the role of the "child-woman" played by Lillian Gish in these works in the history of Hollywood female images has been reassessed. In other words, it has been said that "Griffith's work can be seen as a powerful link between melodrama, which has its roots in the 19th century, and the entire history of American cinema, which has absorbed and developed its forms of expression."
