A bird of the family Laridae (illustration) in the order Charadriiformes. A seagull found widely distributed in the mid-latitudes of the Eurasian continent. They breed in large groups on the coasts, along the banks of inland lakes and marshes, on river bars, and on islands. They migrate to Japan as winter birds and live in flocks on the coasts of bays, ports, and river mouths in the Kanto region and west, but are often seen on inland lakes and the upper reaches of large rivers. They often come onto land on windy days or when the sea is rough. Total length is about 40 cm. The back and upper surfaces of the wings are pale blue-gray, the undersides are white, and there are black areas at the tips of the wings.
