He trained at the Rinzai sect's Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto, and traveled to the Ryukyu Islands in 1450. He served under Kings Sho Taikyu, Sho Toku, Sho En, and Sho Shin, and, receiving their devout support and protection, he worked to spread the teachings of Zen Buddhism and founded Engakuji Temple and other temples.
