It grows on rocks along rivers and is also commonly cultivated for ornamental purposes. The trunk is 1-2 m tall and grows in bundles from the base. The branches are thin and have short soft hairs on the young branches. The leaves are alternate, narrow lanceolate, 2-4 cm long, sharp-headed, almost hairless, and have fine serrated edges. The leaves resemble willow leaves. Around March and April, the plant produces 3-7 small white flowers at almost the same time as new leaves appear, and the inflorescences are arranged continuously on the branches. The calyx has triangular oval lobes, oblong petals, and thin claw-like bases. The capsules are glabrous and leathery, and split open when ripe.
