Date of birth and death unknown. Founder of the Five Pours of Rice Tao (Gotobei-do, later also called Zhengyi-kyo) which arose in the middle of the 2nd century at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. He is also revered as the "founder" of Taoism, and is therefore also known as Zhang Daoling. He was originally from Feng in the Pei state (northern Jiangsu province). He later moved to Heming Mountain in Shu (Sichuan province), where he spread talismans (paper charms) and Taoist writings for healing, and organized a religious sect (Five Pours of Rice Tao). According to Taoist legend, Zhang Ling was granted the title of Heavenly Master by the heavens, and given the name "New Laozi" (Laozi newly appeared in the world) in 142. In the sense of being an intermediary between heaven and man, he is comparable to the Chinese "Son of Heaven", Moses, Jesus Christ, and Muhammad. From the Tang Dynasty to the present day, the headquarters of the Zhengyi sect has been in Longhu Mountain, Jiangxi Province, but after the Chinese Revolution, many Taoists fled to Taiwan. Therefore, the worship of Zhang Daoling continues in Taiwan to this day. His statue has a blue face, wears a Taoist robe, holds a sword to fight against demons, and sometimes rides a tiger.
