A peninsula that juts out north from the western part of Aomori Prefecture. The west faces the Sea of Japan, and the east, together with the Shimokita Peninsula, embraces Mutsu Bay. The northern part faces Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait. The Tsugaru Mountains run from the northern to southeastern part of the peninsula, forming the peninsula's backbone. On the Mutsu Bay side lies the long, narrow coastal plain of Kamiiso Heiya, and the Tsugaru Plain spreads out at the southwestern foot of the Tsugaru Mountains. The peninsula's main industries are agriculture and forestry, and the Tsugaru Plain is dominated by rice paddies, accounting for half of the prefecture's rice production. Apple cultivation is also thriving. The mountains are home to Japanese cypress forests, which are counted among Japan's three most beautiful forests. The area is served by the JR Tsugaru Line, Tsugaru Railway, and national highways 280 and 339. An undersea tunnel runs between Tappizaki at the northern end and Hokkaido, and the JR Kaikyo Line (Tsugaru Kaikyo Line) branches off from Nakaoguni Station on the Tsugaru Line and runs to Kikonai Station in Hokkaido.
