School stirrups - student

Japanese: 学鐙 - がくとう
School stirrups - student
A reading magazine published by Maruzen. It is the oldest of its kind still in existence. It was first published in 1897 as Manabi no Tomoshibi (Light of Learning). It is a monthly magazine with 30 pages in the chrysanthemum size. From the third issue, it merged with the Monthly Report on the Current Prices of Japanese and Western Books and Stationery (first published in 1882), and included a catalogue of newly arrived Western books at the end of the issue. In 1902, it was renamed Gakuto, and in 1903, Gakubu. The content was revamped after Uchida Roan (who joined the company in 1901) took over as editor, and the results of a survey on "19th Century Western Masterpieces" in the January 1902 issue were particularly well received.
